Smart Card Technology
Smart card is a pocket-sized plastic card with a small chip inserted into it. It is also known as a readable device which provides security verification in large organizations. It can store and transmits and records data to a central computer whenever needed.
Smart card is a special type of card like device which contains an integrated circuit chip embedded on it. The IC chip can be a microprocessor with memory or just simple memory circuit.
Smart cards have three main functions: authentication, storing personal information, and storing values.
Smart card-enhanced systems are in use today in several key applications such as health-care, banking, entertainment and transportation. The card data is transacted via a reader connected to a computing system.

How does the Smart Card Works?
Smart card reader is also called as a card acceptance device, or an interface device. There is a minute difference between the card reader and the terminal. The reader is used to determine a unit that interfaces with a computer or microcontroller for all of its processing requirements. Similarly a terminal is also considered as a self- contained processing device. It can be contact type or non-contact type.
A smart card is connected to the host computer or controller via a card reader which gets information from the smart card and accordingly passes the information to the host computer or controller.
The most common applications of Smart cards are:
- Electronic cash
- Computer security systems
- Credit cards
- Wireless communication
- Banking
- Satellite TV
- Ecommerce and Retail
- Transporation
- Telecommunications
- Government identification
